The European large-scale research initiative BATTERY 2030+ presents the long-term research roadmap that outlines the actions needed to invent the sustainable batteries of the future.
The transformation to a climate-neutral society requires fundamental changes in the way we generate and use energy. Batteries are a key enabler to reach this goal, if they can be made sustainable, safe and affordable with ultra-high performance at the same time.
The initiative’s research roadmap has been developed through a European-wide consultation process and identifies three main research directions, based on a chemistry neutral approach, that will accelerate the development of the next generation of batteries.
“BATTERY 2030+ is not about developing a specific battery chemistry, but rather about exploiting the power of digital technologies like artificial intelligence for transforming the discovery and development process of our future smart and connected batteries”, says Kristina Edström, Director of BATTERY 2030+ and Professor of Inorganic Chemistry at Uppsala University.
“To invent the batteries of the future in Europe, we must join forces and find a coordinated, collaborative approach that unites industry, researchers, policy makers and the public behind a common vision”, says Simon Perraud, Deputy Director of BATTERY 2030+ and Deputy Director at CEA-Liten.
The three major research themes identified in the roadmap are:
– Accelerated discovery of interfaces and materials
– Integration of smart functionalities
– Manufacturability and recyclability as cross-cutting areas
CIDETEC Energy Storage has been heavily involved in the elaboration of the roadmap through Elixabete Ayerbe and Oscar Miguel. “Leading one of the key research areas, namely manufacturing of future battery technologies from the perspective of Industry 4.0 and digitalization, the power of modelling and of Artificial Intelligence is proposed to deliver digital twins both for innovative battery geometries and their manufacturing methodologies” says Elixabete Ayerbe, Project Manager at CIDETEC Energy Storage and expert in advanced modelling in the field of battery manufacturing and design.
These virtual representations will certainly complement the physical world offering greater control of battery manufacturing facilities and conceptual design.

As part of the Horizon 2020 program, the European Commission is funding the LiPLANET project over the next two years to establish the lithium battery cell research pilot line network. The eight consortium partners are laying the foundation for a Europe-wide network of research pilot lines, which focuses on research and development in the manufacturing of advanced lithium-based battery cells. Within the funded two project years, the structures for a sustainable network will be established and the network will be implemented and started.
The network aims at strengthening the position of the European Union within the strategic and fast-growing market of lithium battery cells. Besides pilot line operators, relevant industrial and policy stakeholders are specifically involved in the design of the network. Within the LiPLANET network, the cooperation between industrial and academic partners will be strengthened in order to identify knowledge and equipment gaps and to set standards. By organizing joint trainings and workshops, the existing gap between materials research and development and the industrial production of battery cells will be closed, thus enabling efficient and safe scale-up. Accordingly, various activities will be carried out within the project:
– Mapping of the European Lithium-based battery cell research pilot lines
– Implementation of the network in a sustainable, non-profit business model
– Creation of a legal framework and development of an exchange platform for knowledge and data as a basis for cooperation between industry, science and research pilot lines
– Development of standards for the qualification of research pilot lines
– Development of a roadmap to define a strategy for the network focusing on upscaling and sustainability and to support the competitiveness of large-scale industrial production of battery cells in Europe

The European Commission promotes this project in the context of the Horizon 2020 program with two million euros over a timespan from 01.01.2020 until 31.12.2022.

The TECNALIA and CIDETEC Energy Storage Technology Centres combine capabilities to develop new technologies and energy applications based on the use of batteries for different industrial sectors. Emiliano López Atxurra, president of TECNALIA, and Eduardo Junquera, president of CIDETEC, were responsible for signing the strategic agreement between both entities.
With the signing of the agreement, one of the largest technology platforms in Europe will be created for the research and development of energy solutions with storage, with over 100 researchers. This alliance will allow the exploitation of existing synergies between both entities, in which TECNALIA will fundamentally contribute its knowledge in application integration and power electronics, among others, and CIDETEC Energy Storage will contribute its experience in the development of advanced batteries with the aim of becoming European leaders in solutions across the value chain. The strategic collaboration will focus on the development of electrification applications with energy storage in batteries for various industrial sectors, facilitating the integration of renewable energies in the electricity grid, improving energy efficiency and transport electrification. Other targets include the aerospace, aeronautical and maritime sectors.
This initiative is aligned with Europe’s objectives for 2030, which involve the development of new energy models, with energy storage playing a key role in electricity networks and in the mobility of the future.
ALMAGRID, Integration of advanced Energy Storage technologies for grid applications, held its launch meeting at CIDETEC’s offices on 18 February, with representatives from all the participating organisations.
The ALMAGRID initiative, recognised by the CDTI as the Cervera Network of Excellence, is structured around four technological research centres with a high degree of specialisation and excellence in the Energy sector. These centres are CIDETEC Energy Storage, acting as coordinator, Tekniker, ITE and Circe.
The aim of ALMAGRID is to set up a stable framework for collaboration between technology centres in order to develop an action plan aimed at providing advanced storage systems to meet the needs of large-scale integration of renewable technologies into the electricity grid. ALMAGRID aims to optimise the skills of the four centres through a Strategic Collaboration Plan so that they evolve from an initial situation of individual excellence to a final situation of enhanced excellence and coordinated efforts that maximise the impact of the results generated and position the network as a leader in the sector.
Collaboration within the ALMAGRID framework should enable participating centres to improve their understanding of the various potentials, usage cases and market niches where one or other storage technology has the greatest potential impact based on its particular parameters.
In this framework, the CERVERA initiative is a unique opportunity to establish a framework of interaction between the four organisations that will allow them to focus on the activity that the centres have been carrying out individually up until now, generating synergies and significantly promoting the industrial contribution of the activity. All under the motto: “Together we can do more, do it better, and go further”.
