CAPITAL

Energy Storage
Research into new concepts of high energy density batteries for heavy transport.

The ‘CAPITAL’ project is committed to the decarbonization and sustainability of connected zero-emission transport through the creation of 100% electric buses or other electric industrial vehicles for different urban applications, also contemplating the commitment to hydrogen as a solution for collective mobility. The Irizar Group, together with national companies from up to 7 autonomous communities, make up a consortium composed of a total of 21 companies, 61% of which are SMEs. The ‘CAPITAL’ project, led by the Irizar Group, will invest over 63 million euros in projects to achieve a more electrified Spain with the new generation of sustainable vehicles, covering the entire value chain of the vehicle with new designs and solutions while fostering collaborations for essential components.

CIDETEC’S role in the project:

CIDETEC Energy Storage will contribute its experience to the generation of new battery knowledge, laying the foundations for the future development of a new generation of high energy density batteries for the electromobility and heavy transport sector. To achieve this goal, the following challenges will be addressed:

  • Defining a new design and prototyping concepts based on rib techniques that achieve high mechanical strength and low thickness, for a design concept that maximizes energy density.
  • Increasing the level of reliability
  • Studying elements for advanced thermal management that allow batteries to operate within a temperature range that maximizes their performance and durability.
  • Identifying the main mechanisms of battery cell degradation.
  • Extending battery life by defining strategies based on estimating the state of health of the batteries on a regular basis and contrasting this with the analysis of operating cycles.
  • Analysing the revaluation of batteries at the end of their life cycle in the vehicle, specifying potential second uses (storage in microgrids or renewable energy farms).
