Speakers

Dr. Philipp Veit
Dr. Philipp Veit is an expert in the circular battery economy with a PhD in organometallic chemistry. His diverse background includes working in EU energy, climate, and chemistry policy for a Member of the European Parliament and managing an electric car and cargo bike sharing unit for an energy cooperative. Most recently, he contributed to the BATTERY 2030+ initiative at KIT, coordinating roadmap development and standards, and now applies his expertise as Senior Business Development Manager & Public Affairs at Circunomics.
CIRCUNOMICS
Philipp will talk about a recent development by Circunomics: an AI-powered, B2B marketplace where cells, modules, and packs can be traded.
Dr. Hagen Wegner
Dr. Hagen Wegner is an accomplished engineer and researcher with over two decades of experience in sustainable mobility and production technologies. After a significant academic career at RWTH Aachen University, culminating as Chief Engineer of Production Technologies, he transitioned to the automotive and aerospace industry as a Technical Director. For the past decade, he has been a Director at FEV Consulting GmbH, where he now focuses on developing sustainability and circular economy strategies for clients.
FEV CONSULTING
After providing a brief overview of the principles of the circular economy, Hagen will talk about the challenges of end-of-life vehicles in Europe. The regulatory frameworks, circular economy ecosystems, the current state of circularity and how the role of end-of-life vehicles will change in the future.
Dra. Madeleine Scheidema
Dr. Madeleine Scheidema is a Resource Engineer with a PhD focused on reusing residues from laterite leaching to reduce reagent consumption. She has built her career at Metso (formerly Outotec), progressing from research and senior metallurgist roles in smelting, roasting, gold, and battery metals, to her current position as Technology Manager for Hydrometallurgical Black Mass Recycling
METSO
Madeleine will talk about Black Mass Recycling Process and how Battery recycling will reduce the need of virgin raw materials and contribute to circularity, with a lower environmental footprint compared to the use of primary raw materials.
Dr. Farouk Tedjar
Dr. Tedjar is a highly accomplished Electrometallurgy Engineer with two PhDs in Electrochemistry and Physical Sciences from Grenoble. He is a successful entrepreneur, having founded RECUPYL, a pioneering startup in portable battery recycling, which he led for 20 years before its acquisition by SK Group. Currently, he serves as the Group Chief Scientist Officer at SK-TES Group, overseeing global R&D, and has received multiple prestigious awards for his contributions to chemistry and sustainable technology.
SK TES
Farouk will talk about SK Industrial recycling facilities of lithium-ion batteries operating with double closed loop: battery materials closed Electrode to Electrode and water closed loop.
Dra. Marta Álvarez
Dr. Marta Álvarez Tirado is a chemical engineer with a strong academic background and over 13 years of experience in the field of materials and energy. She earned her PhD in solid-state lithium metal batteries through an European MSCA fellowship and has developed much of her career abroad, working in the UK, Belgium, and Sweden. She has held roles at organizations such as Toyota Motor Europe and the British research center TWI Ltd. Currently, she serves as Business Development Manager in the Energy Materials Unit at CIDETEC Energy Storage, where she focuses on driving new public funding opportunities for R&D projects. Throughout her career, she has coordinated and contributed to more than twenty European, national, and industrial projects, and has authored several scientific publications in high-impact journals, along with multiple patents.
CIDETEC Energy Storage
Spain has strong potential to become a leading European hub in the battery sector, covering the entire value chain—from raw material extraction to cell manufacturing and vehicle production. In parallel, various industrial initiatives are emerging around battery circularity and end-of-life strategies, particularly in regions such as Gipuzkoa and the Basque Country. This presentation will provide an overview of the current state of the sector in Spain, highlighting both existing developments and future growth opportunities at the national level.
