The renewal of the agreement will enable continued enhancement of the Naturklima laboratory hosted by CIDETEC with new scientific and technological capabilities, while also promoting the region as a benchmark in battery circularity
CIDETEC and the Department of Sustainability of the Provincial Council of Gipuzkoa have renewed their collaboration agreement to ensure continuity and provide fresh momentum to the Naturklima laboratory, located at CIDETEC’s facilities in the Eskuzaitzeta industrial estate, specialising in the characterisation of materials derived from battery recycling.
The signing of the agreement was attended by CIDETEC’s Director General, Francisco Javier Rodríguez, and the Regional Deputy for Sustainability, José Ignacio Asensio, who highlighted the importance of this public–private collaboration in strengthening Gipuzkoa’s position as an industrial and technological hub linked to the energy transition and the circular economy.
This new agreement consolidates the line of work initiated in 2024 and reflects the shared commitment of both entities to continue advancing the development of strategic capabilities for the region, reinforcing an industrial value chain centred on battery recycling, reuse and second-life applications. This is a key field for electric mobility, industrial decarbonisation and Gipuzkoa’s strategic autonomy in a European context marked by growing demand for energy storage technologies.
Within the framework of this collaboration, the Department of Sustainability is allocating €350,000 for the acquisition of new high-value scientific equipment, which will expand the laboratory’s capabilities in processes such as preparation, formulation, and physicochemical, microstructural and electrochemical characterisation of recycled materials, from laboratory scale through to pilot phases. For its part, CIDETEC complements this contribution with its own investment in equipment and infrastructure, as well as with its expertise and qualified researchers.
CIDETEC’s Director General, Javier Rodríguez, stated that “the renewal of this agreement consolidates a strategic collaboration that allows us to continue advancing in the generation of knowledge and technology to close the battery life cycle. Naturklima is already a key asset for Gipuzkoa’s industrial and scientific ecosystem, and this renewed momentum will enable us to expand its impact and reach.”
The agreement also includes cooperation between both entities in the exploitation of results, knowledge transfer, the incorporation of advances into public information systems, and the implementation of technical, scientific and institutional dissemination activities, thereby reinforcing CIDETEC’s role as a driving force in the field of energy storage and sustainability.
In addition, Naturklima and CIDETEC are jointly promoting the International Zirkular Bat Workshop, a forum that will bring together international experts in battery recycling and reuse, and which will hold its third edition on 26 June at Naturklima. Registration will open shortly.
