eMAGIC

Energy Storage
European Magnesium Interactive Battery Community.

The project:

Mg-based battery technologies have been recognized as a long-term (+10 years) emerging technology for electrochemical energy storage. The potential to use metallic Mg anodes in rechargeable batteries brings important advantages in terms of energy density, cost and safety.

E-MAGIC consortium addresses this potential by developing rechargeable Mg batteries (RMB) focused on Mg-ion (insertion) and Mg-S (conversion) technologies. In this sense, E-MAGIC aims at developing a disruptive scientific and technical approach for new generation high energy density and environmental friendly RMB with an energy density of 400 Wh kg-1 at 100 €/Kwh. E-MAGIC activities will naturally induce structuring of the magnesium community through the involvement of additional stakeholders who transform the scientific outcomes of the project into innovative products, applications and services all along the European Mg value chain.  This include a reinforcement of the European community around magnesium-based battery technologies as emerging electrochemical energy storage system establishing an active scientific relationship of the community with the rest of the world.

Partnership:

E-MAGIC objectives are supported along the project life by a reinforcement of the European magnesium community. This community, led by CIDETEC Energy Storage, gathers some the highest qualified European chemists, physicists, computer scientists, applied mathematicians, environmental and energy management engineers.

Besides CIDETEC as coordinator, the E-MAGIC consortium is constituted by Bar Ilan University (BIU); Atomic Energy and Alternative Energies Commission (CEA), Agencia Estatal Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC); Karlsruhe Institute of Technology / Helmholtz Institute Ulm (KIT-HIU); Technical University of Denmark (DTU); Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt e.V. (DLR); Cambridge University (UCAM); Technion Israel Institute of Technology (IIT); Abengoa Innovación (ABG). This consortium has been built taking into account the specific requirements leading to a multidisciplinary partnership with widely acknowledged expertise in their respective domains covering the complete chain from basic research to process optimization.

Our role:

CIDETEC will act as project coordinator; provide the general administrative management of the project, ensuring its effective implementation and progress. From CIDETEC’s know-how on electrode formulation and processing for different energy storage technologies, CIDETEC will take also relevant role on the validation and up-scaling towards the realization and the assembly of rechargeable Mg-based cells. Additionally, CIDETEC has the key role of leading the dissemination activities as well as to reinforce the Mg-battery community beyond the frame of the consortium.
