ATENA+

Energy Storage
Advanced Technology for stationary Energy storage systems in NA-ion.

ATENA+ is a Horizon Europe project whose main objective is to contribute to improve the competitiveness of the European battery industry by demonstrating a new generation of safe, sustainable-by-design, high performance and cost-effective Sodium-Ion Battery (SIB) technology at pre-industrial scale (TRL7), showcasing its techno-economic feasibility across various real end-user application scenarios and operating conditions. Leveraging a multidisciplinary consortium of leading research institutions and top-tier industry players, ATENA+ will demonstrate the manufacturing of SIB cells up to 80 Ah and >2,5 kWh modules in 24S configurations integrating: (i) optimized, cutting-edge active materials (i.e., stable Co-free layered oxides with low Ni content, EU-sourced bio-based hard carbons, and advanced electrolytes with high-ionic conductivity, enhanced safety and improved SEI/CEI forming capability); (ii) environmentally-friendly, highperformance electrode processing techniques and; (iii) innovative cell/module architecture designs complemented with advanced BMS to achieve optimal performance, improved longevity and superior safety. Cells and modules will be extensively characterized (electrochemically and safety testing) and virtually validated in 5 use-cases targeting both BESS and transport applications.
