CIDETEC Energy Storage Hosts Kick-off Meeting for Horizon Europe Project SOLVE: Advancing Solid-State Battery Development for Electromobility

Energy Storage

CIDETEC Energy Storage, the coordinator of the ambitious SOLVE project funded by European Commission, hosted its inaugural meeting on June 12&13, marking the official launch of a new initiative aimed at revolutionizing battery technology. The project, titled “SOLVE: Advancing the Development and Production of Solid-State Batteries to Drive the Future of Electromobility”, promises to position the EU as a frontrunner in the global battery market by focusing on the development of next-generation solid-state batteries (SSB).

Solid-state batteries represent a significant opportunity for the European Union to become an early technological leader and enhance its global market position. Supported by a powerful international consortium of key industry players, small-medium enterprises and academic experts in the solid state battery field, SOLVE aims to leverage extensive R&D capabilities and contribute to the necessary scaling efforts towards mass production of high performant and safe Gen4b SSB in EU.

To achieve these goals, SOLVE will tackle the most significant barriers hindering sector growth. The project will demonstrate innovations across key stages of the value chain, optimizing active and inactive materials, development and upscaling cell components optimizing associated processing techniques under industrially relevant conditions. The project will be further strengthened by implementing and adapting the web tool PROTEO™, which was predeveloped by CIDETEC Energy Storage and will support and accelerate SSB design. This approach will help develop and manufacture high-performance, cost-effective, safe, and sustainable 20 Ah SSB prototypes and a 0.25 kWh test design module reaching TRL>=6.

Additionally, imperative sustainability criteria will be incorporated to promote efficient resource use through eco-design principles and the development of innovative recycling processes in accordance with Battery Regulation.

With its comprehensive approach and cutting-edge innovations, SOLVE is set to advance the development and production of solid-state batteries, driving the future of electromobility and positioning the EU as a leader in this critical technology sector.
