CIDETEC Energy Storage focuses on modelling and simulation as tools to accelerate battery development

Energy Storage

At the 2nd MONDRAGON UNIVERSITY SCIENTIFIC MEETING ON BATTERY-BASED ENERGY STORAGE SYSTEMS, the different digitalisation techniques being developed at the centre were presented.

In an area like batteries, which is in constant development, in order to meet the needs of the market and society, it is essential to have the latest technologies to speed up research and achieve the best results. Therefore, the windows of opportunities that have opened up in the field of research thanks to modelling and simulation are revolutionising the market, considerably reducing development times and, as a result, the time to market.

Elixabete Ayerbe, Team Leader of Battery Modelling | Postmortem analysis at CIDETEC Energy Storage, took part in the 2nd MONDRAGON UNIVERSITY SCIENTIFIC MEETING ON BATTERY-BASED ENERGY STORAGE SYSTEMS at the Orona Ideo campus (Hernani, Galarreta), a discussion forum where local and international experts shared different visions, mostly revolving around battery modelling and simulation. Five of the eight presentations given by leading members of the sector focused on these technologies, analysing them from different perspectives. This highlights the trend towards digitalisation, which has been established in the field of energy storage.

Elixabete Ayerbe’s presentation, entitled “Deep dive into the modelling: accelerating battery cell developments”, discussed the different digitalisation techniques being developed at CIDETEC Energy Storage. This research covers areas such as battery manufacturing processes, their potential to accelerate research and discovery processes, prediction and analysis of performance and behaviour, as well as prediction of degradation processes.

Elixabete also used the event to present two tools that CIDETEC is working on: cideMOD and PROTEO. The first is already open to the community and accessible via the GitHub platform. The second, which will take battery modelling and simulation a step further, is an intuitive and easy-to-use web app, which, in addition to predicting cell performance, allows cell component optimisation, and is currently in the final stages of development.

Elixabete Ayerbe has extensive experience in the field of battery research and is coordinator of the European DEFACTO project on digitalisation of battery production processes, and is heavily involved in the European initiatives BIG-MAP and Battery 2030+, in the latter as Thematic Leader of Manufacturability.
