Advances in Research on Ultra-Rich Composite Electrolytes for High Voltage Solid-State Batteries

Energy Storage

CIDETEC Energy Storage PhD Student Kevin Vattappara Advances Solid-State Battery Research.

At CIDETEC Energy Storage, PhD student Kevin Vattappara is helping to advance research on inorganic ultra-rich composite electrolytes for high voltage solid-state batteries (SSBs). This project is part of the DESTINY doctoral programme, funded by the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) of the European Union. Kevin’s work focuses on optimizing solid electrolytes to enhance the performance of batteries, particularly those using lithium metal anodes and high-energy cathodes.

The research focuses on composite solid electrolytes with a high ceramic content, specifically designed for use in solid-state batteries. His work aims to optimize the properties of these electrolytes for enhanced performance in cells using lithium metal anodes and high-energy cathodes. Kevin is being supervised by Dr. Andriy Kvasha at CIDETEC Energy Storage and Prof. Dr. Dina Fattakhova-Rohlfing at Forschungzentrum Jülich (IMD-2).

As part of his PhD journey, Kevin presented his findings at prestigious international conferences, including the 244th ECS Meeting held from October 8-12, 2023, in Gothenburg, Sweden, and the Swiss Battery Days event in Zürich, Switzerland, scheduled for August 26-28, 2024.

In addition to his research, Kevin also participated in several technical training schools organized by the DESTINY programme, which have significantly enriched his expertise and provided valuable skills that contribute directly to the ongoing projects at CIDETEC Energy Storage.

Kevin’s research on “Composite Separators with Very High Garnet Content for Solid-State Batteries” was recently published as open access in ChemElectroChem, accessible through the DOI link.

The research at CIDETEC Energy Storage continues to push the frontiers of solid-state battery technology, with the potential to transform future energy storage solutions.

Kevin’s favorite quote is: You need to associate with people that inspire you, people that challenge you to rise higher, people that make you better. Your DESTINY is too important – Joel Osteen.
