Energy storage is a key component of nearly all space missions. It is used to supply power during eclipse periods, manage peak loads, and serve as an electrical on/off power source (or contingency system). Electrochemical energy storage in space is implemented through fuel cell systems (primary and regenerative), batteries (both primary and secondary), and supercapacitors. Currently, lithium-ion battery technology is used almost exclusively in space applications. The space sector represents a very small share of the global battery market (less than 0.001% worldwide). As battery markets for automotive and smart grid applications continue to grow, obsolescence management and supply chain security for space-specific battery requirements are becoming major challenges. The so-called New Space sector is also demanding large volumes of batteries with higher energy density and lower weight, rapid availability, and reduced costs for satellite constellations.
In Europe, there are only two traditional battery suppliers for the space sector, creating a market opportunity for battery manufacturers based on high-availability commercial cells that ensure continuous innovation derived from consumer electronics and automotive developments. These COTS shelf cells provide supply assurance compared to space-specific designed cells and electrolytes. The BATMOD proposal aims to develop technologies for innovative battery products that enable market penetration and provide technological innovation for the new company LANZO Batteries.
