AVANZA

AVANZA is a national research project dedicated to the development and optimization of next-generation rechargeable Zinc-Air Batteries (ZABs) as a sustainable, safe, and cost-effective solution for stationary electrochemical energy storage (EES).

The transition towards a decarbonized energy system demands reliable and efficient storage technologies capable of managing the intermittency of renewable energy sources such as solar and wind. However, current commercial batteries—mainly lithium-ion and lead-acid—are limited by high costs, safety concerns, limited durability, and dependence on critical raw materials, which hinder their large-scale deployment in the electrical grid.

ZABs represent a promising alternative, combining high energy density, intrinsic safety, low production cost, and the use of abundant, recyclable materials. Despite their potential, current ZAB technologies still face challenges related to electrode reversibility, long-term stability, and cycle life.

AVANZA seeks to overcome these limitations by developing advanced electrode materials, optimized formulations, and improved electrolytes. Through this approach, the project aims to enhance performance, extend durability, and pave the way for the practical implementation of ZABs as a key enabler of sustainable and resilient energy storage for the future.

CIDETEC’S role in the project:
CIDETEC will lead the development and optimization of advanced zinc electrodes and electrolytes for rechargeable ZABs, including advanced aqueous formulations with additives and solid-polymer electrolytes. Different separators, zinc particles, and current collectors will also be evaluated at the laboratory scale. In the final stage, the most promising solutions will be integrated into 100 cm² ZAB prototypes, demonstrating enhanced reversibility and performance compared to standard ZABs.
